Tropical Plants Tips and Ideas

Grow Tropical Plants for the Price of a Fruit

If you're looking for plants to spice up your garden or home, consider the many fruiting varieties of tropical plants that can be germinated from seeds in fruits sold in your local supermarket. The main advantage of germinating fruit seeds is that you may grow plants that eventually produce fruit of their own. However, even if your plants don't produce fruit, they will provide some variety to your home.

Many of these plants, being tropical, require a lot of heat to thrive. If you don't have a greenhouse, you may have to content yourself with a plant that only produces leaves and never flowers. If you want to try your hand at serious tropical plant gardening, it's wise to have a dedicated building to retain heat and humidity.

Here are some examples of the plants that can be grown from market fruits. This is by no means an exhaustive list - you can find more information on the Internet or your local nursery.

  • The paw-paw or papaya is a tree that can grow to over 12 feet tall and produce juicy, delicious fruits. You need several plants, as these trees reproduce using a male-female system. Scoop seeds from the interior of a fruit, wash them to remove the pulp and place them in well-drained potting soil. Stick them somewhere warm - these plants need lots of heat to grow happily!
  • Mangos can be grown as indoor plants for the first few years. Once you have enjoyed a mango from the market, scrub away the rest of the pith and soak for a few hours. Put into loose potting soil and place in a warm space.
  • Pomegranates are a hardier variety of plant, being able to survive occasional frosts. Clean some seeds and pop them into a pot of soil. Keep them warm and in a few weeks you should have the beginnings of a bush or tree that will eventually produce bright red flowers and the occasional crop of fruit in hot summers.
  • Citrus plants can grow on a windowsill. If they and their container are large enough, they may even produce fruit. Whether or not this fruit will be suitable for eating or cooking depends on the environment, but the plants are attractive.
  • You can plant a pineapple top (pick one with a crown that is healthy and green) once you have trimmed the flesh off so that the brown root buds show. Let it dry for a few days and then plant it in loose potting soil. Keep the soil moist and prepare yourself for a rather large plant should the planting take.
  • Grow some ginger by planting a piece of fresh gingerroot. The flowers are attractive and have a pleasing scent.

There are a lot of plants hiding inside popular supermarket fruits - try your hand at planting the seeds and see what germinates for some beautiful and unusual additions to your home and garden.

Can you plant plants in the ground if they are in a heated greenhouse.?
They are tropical plants, the greenhouse will be heated and humidified to about 80% Rh. I'm wondering if the soil will freeze. I'd rather not keep them in pots, so they grow bigger.

Care and Type of bromeliad plant?
My grandmother recently passed away and someone had sent this beautiful tropical plant to the funeral home. I took it home this past thursday and had no clue what it was. It is from what I can find out a type of Bromeliad plant. this is a picture of it (Its from a floral shop and several sell this one) http://www.avantegardens.com/images/products/AG-Plants/AG-Bromeliad.jpg 1. How do you take care of this thing? Sunlight...no sunlight...indoors...outdoors...how much to water it? I called the floral shop and since I can't pinpoint which one it came from no one will help me. I'm not sure if they got it on-line or what... 2. Is it toxic. Its from the pineapple family but I do have a Bengal Kitten and 8 year old cat who have a tendency to chew what they're curious about. I do have an off spray that keeps them off the spider plants (Marshall's Time Out Spray..tastes horrid) SO are they toxic? 3. What kind is that? How long does it live? 4. Is this sucker easy to kill? I've never raised one and would like to keep this sucker alive as long as I can. I mean I was close to my gram and the plant is gorgeous. 5. Its getting brown spots on its leaves...does it need water? Plant food? Sunlight? HELP! Any help would be appreciated!

What are some cliches about stories that involve islands?
So basically, what are some cliches about stories with islands in them? The only ones that I could come up with are that the islands are always tropical with sandy beaches, water the color of aquamarine instead of the typical grayish waters you usually see, lush green trees with tropical plants and colorful birds flying around. And secondly, the inhabitants are either tribal people who have tikis all over the place and are usually cannibalistic and primitive. The second type of inhabitant would be the typical sailor who gets ship wrecked on the island or perhaps a plane crashed onto the island. Can anyone else think of anything cliche about stories with islands in them?

i have a tropical fish aqarium approx 3ft long. its kinda new and about 2weeks old, its still going through the maturing stage.. in the tank i have: 5 danios rocks bubble wall and a bubble Ball filter natural plants approx 15 (different sizes) im putting Easy Carbo "3-5ml" in every day to help plant growth and JBL Ferropol 24 "3 drops" everyday for fertiliser. now when i put them into the tank they were a lush green colour with no brown leafs, ive had them in the tank for about 4-5days. looking at the plants now a few of them are going abit of a greenie colour, some are leafs okay with brown parts on them. some of the leafs on sertain plants are starting to slightly wrinkle up and the one plant is a lush green at the top but as you go further down the plant it starts going a browny green colour. all of the plants have more/longer white roots but also have like a brown gunk by the roots aswell ?? im not sure if its the actual roots or if its just gunk. any ideas???? many thanks rob I do also have a Heater in there. i have natural gravel i bought from riverside aquatics "very advisable" from loads of people the fertiliser says its a daily fertiliser so i did put it in once a day

Why is my plant dying?
I have this little indoor tropical plant in my room, its been just under 3 weeks since I got it. Since then I've noticed its started to just dry up and die. More on the sides than on the top area. I dont know why this is happening though. When the dirt starts to feel dry I water it; and if there is any excess water, I get rid of it. (I dont know if sunshine might be an issue, but my room doesnt get much sunlight. )

What is the best place to live with this lifestyle?
I'm an adventerous person (hiking, white water rafting, backpacking, biking) and like to do a lot of things. I want to live somwhere with really clear ocean water and a town right next to it. Problem is I don't like to feel isolated or insecure. I want a main city somewhere around it, but not a huge city, somewhere with a shopping plaza for activities and food and stuff like that, like those 3 or 4 story office buildings, you know that type thing. I like the look of palm trees and tropical plants. I don't really like to much openess on land, again that insecure feeling. I also kind of want a place that has that little tiki bar and is lit up by tiki torches and there is a bunch of people doing there own thing. Kinda like the tahiti look if you know what that looks like. If it's an island too I don't want it super isolated. I'm picky but I think there is that perfect place somewhere. Oh and it has to use american currency and speak mostly english. Also a good place to maybe get a job at an aquarium.
