Professional Landscaping Tips and Ideas

Professional Landscaper

You are more likely to achieve your landscaping goals by hiring a professional landscaper-no matter if your project is a themed garden, like an English garden design or a Mediterranean landscape design, a small garden design that only encompasses landscape planting or a complex construction project. A well-versed Houston professional landscaper will take into account not only your desires, but the specific challenges of this region: dense soil, weather conditions of the Gulf coast, drainage issues, and likely insect infestations and plant diseases.

Choosing a Professional Landscaper

Begin the process by distinguishing between off-the-shelf landscaping design services and a professional designer who can capture your vision for your landscape. During the preliminaries, visit the company website and ask to see a portfolio to determine if the design firm under consideration has a sense of style that complements your own. Ultimately, you want a professional who can design a landscape that reflects your home's architecture and your lifestyle.

As you begin the early discussions, be as specific as possible about what you want the end design to look like. Perhaps you would enjoy hardscapes, like a well-thought-out patio design or pool design, eye-catching gates or interesting pathways. Maybe you like to entertain, something that calls for an outdoor kitchen. Understanding these landscape elements, their relationships to each other and the open space, and interpreting them well distinguishes a Houston professional landscaper working in the top echelon.

The Process

After selecting a landscape professional and the subsequent exploratory discussions, the next steps involve meetings, site analysis, program of uses, and use of the design professional's expertise. During the conceptual phase, the landscape professional develops the overall design and puts it onto paper. The resulting documents will show such specifics as lawn areas, plantings, areas of general use and their sizes, irrigation systems and drainage systems, landscape lighting, and the projected overall cost.

Once you have agreed to the designer's overall layout and made general material selections, it is time for the implementation and construction phase. This phase comes with its own set of landscaping design drawings for documentation purposes:

• For permitting.
• To convey final design intent and material selections for you and the installation contractors.
• To specify materials and installation methods. This paperwork is also known as construction documents.

In the permit arena, each governing body has its own set of requirements for landscape plan approvals. Usually a submittal of the permitting package will be accepted or rejected by a committee. This checkpoint illustrates why it is important to hire a knowledgeable professional, as they will know what information to include-items like engineered drainage plans, pool fencing layout, lot coverage ratios and specifications.

Taking the Long View

In choosing among Houston landscape designers, remember that it makes sense to use a design firm that also performs the project management and landscaping installation. Jeff Halper, landscape specialist with Exterior Worlds, says, "You want someone who not only has great ideas, but also knows local contractors and their methods of construction, the best use of materials and their availability, and overall budget development and containment. In other words, you want a landscaper who can bring you a landscape design that thrives in the Houston climate-and is on-time and on-budget."

Landscaping ..What would be the most important feature to add to a small front yard to make it most appealing?
I have a small front yard with two large oaks. Other than those two trees, everything else is drab, scraggly and/or eroded away. The yard is mostly on a slope and the soil is washing away down to the sidewalk. Other homes in this neighborhood are attractive and well manicured. I purchased this home a few months ago and am now ready to put about $3,000 dollars into professional landscaping. What makes a house attractive and appealing to you? I live near Fort Worth, Texas. Our summers are very hot and dry. I will be adding an irrigation system, however, we are always rationed on water usage in the summer.

What is the average cost for small landscaping jobs?
We have some uneven spots in our yard and would like to have some trees planted. We already have red granite along the sides of the house and the garage, but the plastic edging is not straight in some places. Due to very hectice schedules, we are thinking about hiring a professional landscaping service. Just curious if anyone has done that and what the costs might be.

A professional landscape gardener planted buxus and another berry plant in my garden. Should I remove them?
I specifically told the landscaper we did not want any poisonous or dangerous plants as we have two small children. Now my toddler has extreme contact dermatitus from the buxus. Should I demand they replace the plants, or any idea how to protect my baby? The garden is now a completely no-go area, which is totally impractical!!

How important is your landscape to you?
I am getting in to that saturated landscape market and I am trying to get an idea of how badly people want to have a gorgeous landscape. I know there are alot of ma and pop landscapers out there so I am wondering if there was a new company built with people that had a true professional landscape background, some even with horticulture degrees, would people pay what it really costs to have a sustainable water saving beautiful landscape?

How do I get my lawn to look thick and green like the professional landscapes?
I just bought my first house and the grass is brown and being overrun by weeds. It looks horrible. I want to start over and plant some Kentucky Blugrass (I live in Minnesota). How should I do this? Do I just seed over top of the current grass, or should I rip it out or what? And also, how do I maintain it every year and what shoud I do and not do (lawn mower height, fertilizer, weed prevention, etc.). I know its complicated, but give me your best tips, write a short novel if you have to! I just want my lawn to look good.

What's more important during a drought?
Watering your damn plants, or being able to take a shower? I live in Georgia, and incase you didn't know, we're about two months away from not having any drinking water. Some town in Tennessee is already dry. A city in metro-Atlanta tried to pass an ordinance banning ALL outdoor water, including professional landscaping. They had a bunch of whiney citizens at their city council meeting last night b*tching about it, and eventually the council caved. What's wrong with these people and their priorities? Personally, I think the entire states of Georgia, Florida and Alabama need to adopt a complete ban on all outdoor water, including professional landscaping. I walk my dog on the Chattahoochee River several times a week, and you can see the severe decrease in the pool level. And besides, how are these people going to water ANY plants if we have no water. I don't feel like showering with Poland Spring bottles. What's wrong with people, people? Well slopoke, considering that there ISN'T ANY WATER!!! The damn plants are going to die anyways, and that is my point. Aside from the light sprinkling of the occasional shower, we ain't got none! People don't realize just how dire the situation is now, and we're going to have to do some major adjusting from what we're used to. That includes not hogging up the drinking water.

What does my Tarot reading mean?
Love is in the air today, nikki! Under the influence of the World and the Empress, you want just one thing: to surround yourself with as many people as possible and flirt with one and all! You know this kind of day only happens once in a while, so you're ready to meet someone's across a crowded room and then, who knows? As far as work is concerned, you?ll need to spend much of the day dealing with other people, however much you?d like to avoid it! The World, which represents the professional landscape today, is a sign of openness, while your feelings are dominated by the Hanged Man and you?d rather shut yourself off. Faced with such a conflict, you?d do best to free yourself from your self-imposed barriers and let yourself join in with the opportunities presented by others. Don?t worry ? to open up is to blossom!
