The Difference Between Plant Food & Fertilizer

Is basically building blocks (basic elements) which can be compared to "raw materials" used in the photosynthesis process to create energy (carbohydrates = fructose = plant sugars), and then is dissolved in water in the soil and carried through the roots up to the leaves of the plants.

Plants utilize the sugars (plant energy) to create starch. The starch is used to create new stems, leaves, flowers, etc. But without fertilizer, an important component of the photosynthesis process could not be carried out (the production of sugars and starches). In the extreme example that NO fertilizer is available the plant would shows signs of "nutrient deficiency" and eventually die as no food would be produced. The plant can not produce plant food (sugars) without fertilizer even if water, carbondioxide and sunshine was available. However, for plants which develop bulbs and other enlarged storage units (such as potatos, onions, etc) you have to look at the effect of fertilizer over a longer period.

If fertilizer is lacking, or not available in sufficient quantities, to replentish the withdrawn energy (what borrowed from the bank) the bulb will eventually shrink and in the end the plant will die.

For example, Miracle Grow 15-30-15 All Purpose Water Soluble Plant food contain these nutrients (lable):

Nitrogen: 15%

Available Phosphate (P2O5) 30%

Soluble Potash (K2O) 15%

Boron (B) 0.02%

Copper (CU) 0.07%

Iron (FE) 0.15%

Manganese (MN) 0.05%

Molybdenum (MO) 0.0005%

Zinc (Z) 0.06%

EDTA (Chelating Agent) 1.14%

The mixture is put together in the volumes by which plants normally take up the nutrients. For example, plants take up substantial quantities of nitrogen, potash, and potassium but very small amounts of Iron, Zinc and Boron for example (in fact these can be lethal to plants in larger amounts).

You should know that plants respond differently to different compounds. For example, fertilizers with high levels of nitrogen promotes green, leafy growth (e.g. nitrogen is high in lawn fertilizers) but too much can prevent fruiting or flowering. Example 29-3-4.

Fertilizers high in potassium and/or phosphorous (compared to nitrogen) tend to be used for flowering and fruiting plants as these plants consume large amounts of these nutrients. Example 5-10-10, 15-30-15, etc.

Plants need all 16 essential nutrients to grow. If just one is missing, the plant will die. However, some nutrients (as outlined above) is needed in very small quantities (and some nutrients will almost always be readily available, such as sulfur). Others are depleted fast from the soil and must be supplied often (nitrogen, potassium).

Generally, if a given soil is deficient in the nutrient being applied, plants respond dramatically to being fertilized. If the soil has adequate amounts of fertilizer, response will generally be modest or none.

Quantitative determination of phosphorus in plant food?
1. An experiment carried out with a plant food that contained .73 g of phosphate, PO4^3-. What mass of MgNH4PO4.6H2O precipitate should he obtain? 2. Use dimensional analysis to convert .350 g of phosphorus to grams of P2O5 3. If 12.5 g of a certain fertilizer is found to contain 3.35 grams of phosphorus as P2O5, what is the value of P in the N-P-K designation? Equations are: PO4^3-(aq) + H3O+ HPO4^2-(aq) + H2O(l) 5H2O(l) + HPO4^2-(aq) +NH4^+(aq) + Mg^2+(aq) +OH^- MgNH4PO4.6H2O(s)

Calculate the #(NH2)2CO in the sample?
A 0.5843g sample of plant food preparation was analyzed for its N content by the Kjeldahl method. The liberated NH3 was collected in a 50.00mL solution of 0.05063M HCl and 7.46 mL of 0.04917M NaOH was needed to back-titrate the excess HCl. Calculate the #(NH2)2CO in the sample.

African Violet Care Questions....What Is Indirect Sunlight?
I bought an African Violet and it requires indirect sunlight. I have it on a table near the window but I need to make sure its not getting too much light or the heat of the light will affect it. Please explain so I can know exactly where to place the plant during the day (there are a lot of explanations showing "northbound this, eastbound that." I just need a simple yet accurate explanation on where I should place the flower. I was also told to water it Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays from the bottom. Is that fine? At night it gets cold, should I remove it and place it somewhere else? Everywhere is still cold but near the window is much colder. What should I do? How often should I feed the plant? The plant food is 7 drops per quart. There will be left over mixture (food/water). Can I store it in a bottle for future use? Will it become less effective if it sits there over time? 1 quart of the mixture will no doubt last 6 months depending on how often I water. From the picture below, the sun is shining on the flower it on a table very close to the window. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78373623@N06/7054178089/ @ Scott Kelso. Its on a table next to the window and sun is shining above it. Is that too little sun still or is that fine?

Planting flowers for the first time?
Hi! Okay so while shopping around one day I got a couple packets of flower seeds because I had a sudden urge to grow some flowers. The two types I got are pansys and impatiens. I have no idea at all how to garden. I have some pots and soil and that's all I have so far. Do I need anything else? Like plant food or something? Each type of flower came with their own directions but they aren't too detailed. For the pansy the directions said - Start indoors about 12 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds thinly and evenly in seed starting formula. Cover completely; firm lightly and keep evenly moist. For the impatiens - Start indoors in a warm, well-lighted area. Sow shallowly in seed starting form. Some questions I have are - How much do i water each plant and how many times a day? Since I'm going to start indoors do they have to placed by a window in direct sunlight or is it okay to leave them just by my desk where there's no window but a lamp? How many seeds do I put in each hole in the soil I make for the flower? Also if you could tell me all the needed information to growing flowers then that would help a ton :D

Help with lucky bamboo care?
I bought a lucky bamboo plant about a month ago and have been taking VERY good care of it; Giving it spring water with plant food in it, giving it sunlight (through UV proof glass). Lately it is starting to change color though. When I bought it, it was a very pale green color, now it is changing to a darker, almost spinach color. Is this a good sign or bad? Thanks

May i tell you that you are not being poisoned by your vegetables, but you are being poisoned by your medicine?
Pesticides do screw up the eco system, but not your digestive system. Non organic plant food is the nutrients the plant eats... it grows, right? If you choose organic, well enjoy, but science has never found a difference. Large commercial doesn't count.

Has spice changed your perspective of life?
I had a super bad trip in a car off plant food about a week or two ago, and each time I sit in the passenger seat in a car 'being sober' I feel like I'm tripping nuts again. It's weird. Almost like it changed the perspective of life.. Maybe life acid (although I've never done acid, only marijuana and the occasional spice bowl). How long will this last??
