Landscapers Tips and Ideas
The Basic Principles Of Landscape Design
Whether you plan on "borrowing ideas" or plan on creating your own landscaping design, you should have at the very least a basic understanding of the principles of landscape design.
This doesn't mean that you have to apply every principle to every part of your plan. But just having an understanding of these principles will help you generate ideas and increase your creativity.
Great landscaping lies in the eyes of the its creator. So, while the principles of landscape design are great guidelines to follow, don't feel like they're the "have to rules" of landscaping. Abstract and creativity are allowed.
Unity should be one of your main goals in your design. It may be better understood and applied as consistency and repetition. Repetition creates unity by repeating alike elements like plants, plant groups, or decor throughout the landscape. Consistency creates unity in the sense that some or all of the different elements of the landscape fit together to create a whole.
Unity can be achieved by the consistency of character of elements in the design. By character, I mean the height, size, texture, color schemes, etc. of different elements.
A good example would be in the use of accent boulders. If you've ever seen a landscape design that had one large white round boulder here and another large red square granite boulder there and so on, then you've seen that unity wasn't created by this specific element.
This is just one example but the principle applies to all other elements such as groups of plants and materials.
A simple way to create unity in your landscape is by creating themes. And one of the simplest ways to create themes is by using a little garden decor or garden statues. Creating a theme garden is easier when it's related to something you're interested in or have a passion for.
If you're into butterflies for instance, you could create a theme using plants that attract butterflies as well as using statues, ornaments, and other decor that are related to butterflies.
Unity should be expressed through at least one element in your landscape and preferably more. Using elements to express a main idea through consistent style and a specific theme is what creates harmony.
Simplicity is actually one of the principles in design and art. It's one of the best guidelines you can follow as a beginner or do it yourselfer. Just keep things simple to begin with. You can do more later.
Simplicity in planting, for instance, would be to pick two or three colors and repeat them throughout the garden or landscape. Keeping decor to a minimum and within a specific theme as well as keeping hardscapes such as boulders consistent is also practicing simplicity.
Balance in design is just as the word implies. Equality. There are basically two types of balance in landscape design. Symmetrical and Asymmetrical.
Symmetrical balance is where there are more or less equally spaced matching elements of the garden design. With a garden equally divided, both sides could share the same shape, form, plant height, plant groupings, colors, bed shapes, theme, etc.
You may remember creating something like this when you were a kid in art class at school. Where you take a piece of paper, splash paint on it, fold it in half, unfold it, and then it magically creates an interesting symmetrical design. So symmetrical balance or design is somewhat of a mirror image or reflection.
Asymmetrical balance on the other hand is one of the principles of landscape design that's a little more complex. While textures, forms, colors, etc. may remain constant to create some unity, shapes and hardscapes may be more random. This form of balance often has separate or different themes with each having an equal but different type of attraction.
A good example of this would be where bed shapes or paths differ on both sides of the dividing line. One side could be curvy with a sense of flow while the other side is straight, direct, and hard.
This can also create a neat contrast. Flowing lines are pleasing to the eye but the bold contrast of a curve with a straight line can be very interesting.
Asymmetrical balance isn't necessarily limited to just the shape of your garden.
An example might be where one side of the garden is mostly large shade trees while the other side is predominately a lower growing flower garden or even a mix of both examples. This is only limited to your imagination.
Contrast and harmony can also be achieved using plants. Fine foliage verses coarser foliage, round leaves verses spiked leaves as well as color compliments and contrasts.
Plant height, color, and texture may be varied from one area to the next but each area should stay consistent within its own theme.
You'll hear me talk about "themes" a lot. Many successful do it yourself designs follow a basic theme to achieve most of the principles of landscape design described on this page. The proper use of plants and garden decor or a mix of both is a simple way to achieve themes.
Color adds the dimension of real life and interest to the landscape. Bright colors like reds, yellows and oranges seem to advance toward you and can actually make an object seem closer to you. Cool colors like greens, blues, and pastels seem to move away from you and can make an object seem farther from you.
Grays, blacks, and whites are considered neutral colors and are best used in the background with bright colors in the foreground. However, to increase depth in a landscape, you can use dark and coarse textured plants in the foreground and use fine textured and light colored plants in the background.
Colors can also be used to direct your attention to a specific area of the garden. A bright display among cooler colors would naturally catch the eye. Natural transition can be applied to avoid radical or abrupt changes in your landscape design. Transition is basically gradual change. It can best be illustrated in terms of plant height or color but can also be applied to all elements in the landscape including but not limited to textures, foliage shape or size, and the size and shape of different elements.
In other words transition can be achieved by the gradual, ascending or descending, arrangement of different elements with varying textures, forms, colors, or sizes.
An example of a good transition would be a stair step effect from large trees to medium trees to shrubs to bedding plants. This example is where a little knowledge of proper plant selection would come in handy.
Transition is one of the principles of landscape design that can be used to "create illusions" in the landscape. For example a transition from taller to shorter plants can give a sense of depth and distance (like in a painting), making the garden seem larger than it really is. A transition from shorter to taller plants could be used to frame a focal point to make it stand out and seem closer than it really is.
Line is of the more structural principles of landscape design. It can mostly be related to the way beds, walkways, and entryways move and flow.
Straight lines are forceful and direct while curvy lines have a more natural, gentle, flowing effect.
Proportion simply refers to the size of elements in relation to each other. Of all the principles of landscape design, this one is quite obvious but still requires a little thought and planning. Most of the elements in landscape design can be intentionally planned to meet the proper proportions.
For instance if you are creating a small courtyard garden, an enormous seven foot garden statue placed in the center would be way out of proportion and a little tacky to say the least. Or a small four foot waterfall and pond placed in the center of a large open yard would get lost in the expanse.
Don't misunderstand this to mean that if you have a large yard you can't have smaller features or garden decor. Proportion is relative and elements can be scaled to fit by creating different rooms in the garden. The goal is to create a pleasing relationship among the three dimensions of length, breadth, and depth or height.
A small water feature can be proportionate if placed in a corner or on the edge of a large area and becomes a focal point of the larger area while creating its own distinct atmosphere. An entire room, sitting area, or theme can be created around it. Other rooms and themes can be created as well. See small gardens for ideas on creating rooms and creating illusions.
Also, special consideration and study should be given to proper plant selection to avoid using plants that are out of proportion.
Repetition is directly related to unity. Its good to have a variety of elements and forms in the garden but repeating these elements gives variety expression.
Unity is achieved by repeating objects or elements that are alike. Too many unrelated objects can make the garden look cluttered and unplanned.
There's a fine line here. It's possible that too much of one element can make a garden or landscape feel uninteresting, boring and monotonous.
However, unity can still be created by using several different elements repeatedly. This in turn keeps the garden interesting.

Dream interpretation?
So it had my guy friend in it, but he was gay. It also had Neil Patrick Harris in his Barney Stinson character from How I Met Your Mother. We went several places and were being chased by Michael Meyers but only I was aware of him, someone would say he's a landscaper and only I would know it was Michael Meyers. It seemed to be because we were rich..like buying name brand chips (yeah...) and living in a huge house
he walked across the hallway and was about to shoot me (even though I don't think he usually uses a gun) and he shot me but I woke up right before the bullet connected with me. I also have NOT watched a Michael Meyers movie in a long time. Like months.

Is this landscaper ripping me off?
I had to move out of state in a hurry two months ago so I hired a property manager to manage my cabin in Maryland. Long story short she still hasn't found a tenant and she just keeps pressuring me to buy all kinds of things for the house and she is always hiring people to do landscaping and stuff and I really think they are all taking advantage of my situation.
The landscaper charged $85/hr for labor, $125 for gutter cleaning, $50 for clearing annuals, $40 for cutting broken branches from bushes, and $45 for cutting back fountain grasses, so for 4 hours of work I was charged $610. He did not install any plants or mulch, so I didn't pay for any materials.
Does this sound extortionate to anybody else? The property manager wants to hire this guy several times a year. I am making double house payments and I simply can't afford it.
Also I want to ask, is it normal for a landscaper to charge for labor PLUS charging for every individual thing he does?

Emancipation laws in Florida?
Hi, I'm Senna.
I'm 14. I'll be 15 in a month.
I currently am working as a landscaper. I make 17.65 an hour.
I have 600$ saved up. I go to school everyday. My grades are good too. I found a cheap apartment that I could move in to.
My mom has custody of me but I moved out 2-3 months ago.
I currently stay with my grandparents.
My dad killed himself so I don't have a dad.
My mom verbally, emotionally, and physically hurts me.
I have a counselor and she said my mom was corrupting me so I should get emancipated.
I can take care of myself really well. Back when I was 3-8 my mom would always come home drunk at 4 a.m. with a strange man. I always protected my little sister from her and him. My brother Alec, got his own apartment when he was 14. I was about 9 my sister was 6. I lived with him until he passed. He passed away when he was sixteen... I had two other older siblings. Angel and Tony. They were in a juvenile detention center because my mom always said they did drugs and robbed people when she really did. After me and Tegan moved back in abuse got worse. She said Alec hated me. She told me to kill myself. Everyday I went to school and I was made fun of there too. Tegan went to foster care 2 weeks before Xmas. In August I found out I had another brother. My mom gave him up so he could have a "better life." He raped me and Tegan on the third day we met him. I told my mom and she said I was lying. She favorites him. I wanna get emancipated so I can get a better life. I wanna adopt my sister later in life as well.
How can I get myself emancipated?

Will a a Dog Run be enough to help me pass a Home Check when adopting a Dog?
Ok, so I went out to a dog shelter the other day, and I found this lovely 3 year old house trained terrier mix (which I wasn't expecting to happen). But the problem is this: I'm sure my back garden isn't exactly "Dog Proof" enough to pass a home check, I mean... it's pretty big and I can dog proof the sides, but the end of the garden is full of trees and bushes, so it'll take alot on my part.
So if I assure the inspector that I am and WILL dog proof the garden. But in the meantime if I got a Dog Run, will that be enough to pass the home inspection?
I can easily dog proof my house itself
If this info helps:
the dog won't be home alone more than 5 hours. So it will get to pee, Plus I'll walk it in the morning, and even longer in the evening. - I'll make sure to give it a mental and physical workout.
By the way, I'm 20 go to college and live with my Mother and Sister.
Please let me know if that will work, or how to dog proof a garden fast.DIY or builder/landscaper - if the latter, what would the price range be (In euro)?
Thank you for very much!!!

my neighbor's have been using 3' x 150' of our land. We got a survey but they removed the markers and planted?
They gave a small amount of money to the previous owners for the use. We had not knowledge of this. He is a landscaper and built the retaining wall and fence for us. When we questioned if our land went over further he became upset and said no. We got a survey and when the markers were put on his side of the fence he removed them. He has now planted trees and buildings on the fence claiming it is grandfathered in. He also expanded his pool within two feet of the fence. Can we take our property back?

I need some advice from a professional Landscaper who is a CEO and/or founder of their own firm?
I am an 18 year old freshman college student majoring in Business Management. I plan on starting my own Landscaping Company that does anything and everything ranging from irrigation, lighting, construction, design, architecture, maintenance, water features, outdoor living spaces, and work for schools, businesses, hospitals, churches, banks, everywhere you can think of. This is my dream career, I love being outside and doing tough and dirty work. When I was younger every time I got some money I would buy me some sort of yard equipment and would look at landscaping magazines and catalogs all the time. So I have been a yard geek for as long as I can remember. I need some advice on what I should major in or take courses for along with my business classes. I am willing to do every thing I have to in order to achieve my goal. Also I need some advice on how to go about getting an internship for this summer at a landscaping company. I live in metro Atlanta (Cobb Co.). I just really want some great advice and counseling from a veteran and great landscaper like those you see on DYI/ HGTV
Thanks

ESP and mind control? What are these events?
First off, if you dont believe in this phenominon then please be respectful dont waste anyones time by answering, thank you.
To my question: I have noticed recently that I have been able to project thought and others will either hear my thoughts as if they are spoken words and sometimes I have influenced other to do specific things for me. Some of these events have happened with pure strangers while others wre with family members. My first event happened a few days ago and it was what got me started on putting the puzzle pieces together.
I was diging in the garden for grubs to feed our family pet toad. 2 of my children were helping. I caught my finger on a rose thorn and verbalized in my mind, " i just cut myself". I kept working and didn't look at the finger because it felt like it was a minor cut and I was pressed for time as it was getting dark. I then thought to myself, " wait, if its cut then I shouldn't keep digging in dirt" so I thought again and without looking at my finger "did I cut myself?"
My son then asked me, "Dad, Did you cut your finger?" By this time I hadn't missed a beat, I had just kept on working. I checked my finger and it wasnt cut at all. So I asked my son how he knew that I might have been cut? He said, he thought that he heard me ask him if I had cut myself.
The second incident happened 2 months ago in a mcdonalds. I was filling my cup with soda and waiting for a man to grab his straws so that I could grab mine. I thought to myself but for some reason I was a bit irratated that day and I thought to the guy, " If you're gonna take your time then you better hand me my straw first, I dont wanna wait all day for you." The guy appeared to nervously fumble around at the counter. I was feeling a bit sorry for him as he was becoming notiably anxious for some reason. I was aware of my body posture because I know that when Im in a bad mood sometimes it can come across as hostile and I dont want to be mean to people either verbally or through body language. I made it a point to stand in a very submissive non threatening posture so as not to add to his anxiety. What he did next caught me off guard and surprised me. While fumbling, he grabbed a small handful of straws and instead of taking them for himself and leaving, he stopped and looked at me and tried to hand me his straws. I thanked him politely, and said thats ok, I can grab mine.
The third happened about 1 year ago while I was on a window cleaning job on a new home construction site. The site was full of people. There were about 20 landscapers who were running behind schedule and were rushing arouns putting in some sod. It made it difficult to manuver my ladder around the house because of the constant foot traffic. I go irratated but kept my composure so as not to start a confrontation. I was stand behind a working waiting for others to pass and I looked at him and thought to myself, " Why dont you guys just move your ahsses and get the job done already!" His reaction caught me off guard. He whipped himself around and had this really hurt and offended look on his face and uttered 'HUH?!" There was about 5 other people right next to us and no one else had any sort of reaction.
The last event happened about 10 years when I was renewing my license at the DMV. I had gotten numerous requests for jury duty and i knew that the state of California used you drivers license addresses as their data base for thier jury pool. While the rep was typing in my address for my drivers license, I told him in my head," Screw up my address". I waited for my license and when it didnt show I had make arraingements to pick it up at the DMV. Sure enough my address was wrong. It was my po box with some extra number and street information .
So my question is, how do you classify these events? I know about mind reading and precognitions but these seem a bit different. Are they a skill? And if so, could you develop it/them?
Thank you for your help and your feedback!
@ Sir John, Thanks for your feedback. I was wondering if anyone was going to answer the topic is a bit unusual.
To the hater(s), obviously, even though I specifically directed all non believers, naysayers or any other negative member to not comment, as is usual for them they demonstrate their lack of respect for boundaries and others and a complete lack of self control. Why is the most negative comment is always from a so called "top contributor"? So typical for a narcissist. They cant resist I guess.
Thank you 1 sec ago also for your comments and validation.
Also thank you intel for your input and validation as well.
Thank you sole, I didn't cmpletely agree with your comment and it was a little off topic but appreciate nontheless.

Want to hold my ground and say no to a carpool?
I am a 41yo sahm with two children. For years I carpooled my daughter to school with a friend of mine. She worked and I got the sob story about how she needed help although her and her husband pull in well over 200k, have an aupair, house cleaner, grocery service, landscaper etc. I did it for years but felt like I always got the short end of the stick and like I had "fool" written on my forehead. . Also, her daugther was never ready so it would make my own kids late. Furthermore, they would either "forget" to pick up or always be late making my daughter very anxious as I'm always early. She would call and say that she had a change of plans and can we switch etc. I always agreed even though I had an infant at the time and babysat other children. Last year I finally lost it and sent her a nasty email because I had had enough. She of course sent another back stating all the times she had helped me out (???) and that I was ungrateful so the carpooling stopped and so did the friendship for awhile. Now we are friendly again but I am very guarded. Our daughters are in the same activity after school and she invited us over the other day and casually brought up carpooling again. I pretended I didn't hear her. Now, I can carpool but I really don't want to. We are friends but after what I went though last time I don't trust that she has my best interests in mind plus I really think she is bipolar because one minute she's happy and then she's yelling at everyone. Also, she brought up a sleep away camp IN FRONT OF MY DAUGHTER and said it was a good idea because her daughter was going. I was livid and call her after the get together to tell her she is not going hundreds of miles away by herself to a camp that we know nothing about where there will be noone else we know there. She said "Well, that's your decision" and I said "Yes, it is my decision". Mind you, my husband and I have NO HELP. I left my 6-figure career to stay home and raise our children and I feel that I am responsible for getting my own children to and from activities otherwise they don't go. I would never ask anyone for help unless I absoultely needed it or was stuck. I think because we have no help I'm very independent and just do it! So how do I tell her that I'm not interested? I know she's going to blow up at me but I really don't care. Lately between all the bs with my husband's family and this situation has gotten me so sick that I vomit and can't sleep. Or I overeat and I am about 25lbs overweight. We have also been trying to have another baby but either I miscarry or don't get pregnant at all which I attribute to all this stress as my bloodwork has come back fine. I want to be a good friend but I feel as though I'm being taken advantage of and this friend, (if you can call her that), I feel is bullying me into something I don't want to do. I do want the kids to be friends but if they weren't it wouldn't bother me or my kids that much. How do I stand my ground without being considered a "bitch" as I've been told behind my back.
Sorry, I don't normally use language but I have to state the facts. Thank you.
